Top of the Line Guide to Forfaiting
Ian Guild is well known in the Forfaiting (Amazon, please note, your spelling is incorrect!)arena and this book of his has helped many a practitioner and neophyte alike. Starting from basics, the authors outline the origin of forfaiting, its advantages and drawbacks, the technicalities behind forfaiting quotations, quote comparision. Most interesting of all are the key cases discussed which bring out both the operational as well as legal angles to forfaiting. You do not have to be an expert to understand the subject; Guild and Harris have a gift for simplifying concepts and making them easy to understand. Highly recommended, even though the book is now old.

Indispensible!
This book was a great guide to shopping London. I wasn't looking for a bargain shopping guide and this certainly isn't that. But if you are, this book may not be for you. Suzy has expensive tastes (like me). I really needed to have some idea where all the interesting boutiques and shopping areas were and this book was exactly what I needed.

The Furniture Factory Outlet Guide, 3rd Edition
Published in Paperback by Home Decor Press (January, 2003)
Author: Kimberly Causey
Average review score:

remember the college guides?
This one looks like one...every page has a different outlet, with information like location and telephone, hours, email, a brief description with very personalized comments from the author, directions on how to get there, and lists of manufacturers each outlet carries or does business with. It also has some photos of items you could find there and the great discounts offered. Too bad I don't live in the North Carolina area or I would be off every weekend going to every outlet. It's great for those who really want to save big money on furniture and accessories for the home. The book did mention 3 big warehouses in NC, which I already know about, but offered more info about them than what I already knew. If you plan on getting furniture, get the book, but first check if there is a copy in your local library instead of spending the money on the book. This is a guide you will probably use once every other year, or until you finish furnishing your home.

Fascinating, Exciting and Scary
This book scared the hell out of me. Inside is a web of politics, technology and science (fiction?) of an intricate nature. Together, they give us a glimpse of possible futures enlightened by technology or endangered by legistration. Sally Richards weaves all this wonderful material into a fascinating story that will leave you with much thought to process.

Why bad things happen to good companies
James Rieley really understands why people in big companies spend all their time fighting each other instead of fighting the competition. Better yet, he has some good ideas for leaders who want to change that.

Getting Real About Virtual Commerce (HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition)
Published in Digital by Harvard Business School Press (28 June, 2003)
Authors: Philip Evans and Thomas S. Wurster
Average review score:

Internet competition on reach, affiliation, and richness
Philips Evans and Thomas S. Wurster are vice presidents of the Boston Consulting Group. This article was published in the November-December 1999 issue of the Harvard Business Review.

Initially, electronic commerce has been a landgrab which took speed, a willingness to experiment, and a lot of cyberssavvy. But that phase has ended. However, in the second phase the key players have to defend and capture territory. In this article the authors offer practical advice to each player on competing in this 2nd generation of e-commerce. Companies are forced to focus on strategies to achieve competitive advantage. Success will go to the businesses closest to consumers. Navigation is the battlefield on which competitive advantage will be won or lost. There are three dimensions of navigation: (1) Reach is about access and connection; (2) Affiliation is about whose interests the business represents; and (3) Richness is the depth of the information that a business gives to or collects about its customers. The authors discuss the competition on each of these dimensions. In their opinion, navigators and e-retailers have the natural advantage in reach and affiliation, while traditional product suppliers and retailers have the edge in richness. The authors provide advise from the perspective of a navigator, electronic retailer, incumbent product manufacturer, and incumbent category killer retailer.

Good solid article on the second (latest?) phase of competition in electronic commerce. This article was adapted from the authors' bestseller 'Blown to Bits: How the New Economics of Information Transforms Strategy'. It shows the changes from the orginal landgrabbing strategies to focusing on competitive advantage and proper strategies. Highly recommended. The authors use simple US-English, although with some Internet/e-commerce jargon.

Getting Unscrewed and Staying That Way: The Sourcebook of Consumer Protection
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (July, 1993)
Authors: David Klein, Marymae E. Klein, and Douglas D. Walsh
Average review score:

An excellent catalog of consumer protection
The authors write that "many consumers who are ultracautious about their buying habits seem to be rather casual about their saving and borrowing practices. This carelessness can, of course, cost them far more in the long run than an occasional bad buy." This book covers all consumer issues, including money matters of borrowing and credit, describing all the protections afforded to consumers.
